Adytum means the innermost sacred
part of a Greek temple – sanctum. This is what we at Adytum
seek to create - a totally safe, comfortable, caring and
confidential environment. It is here that people can bring the
issues and concerns that trouble them. The Adytum Counselling
Service was set up in 1996 with the aim of providing a
professional therapeutic service to individuals, couples,
groups and corporate clients in the South Wales area.
Adytum now has a total of four counsellors who work within
the group and who are all professionally qualified. All
counsellors are vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau and are
members of the British Association of Counsellors and
Psychotherapists (BACP). We abide by the BACP Code of Ethics
and Practice. Adytum counsellors are experienced in
relationship issues, depression, anxiety, sexual and emotional
abuse, eating disorders, weight loss, bereavement, stress,
family or work related issues, trauma, low self esteem etc.
Adytum uses a mainly Person Centred approach but Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy techniques are used as and when
appropriate.
The principal, Tony Phillips, is an experienced foster
carer specialising in difficult to place young people, whilst
other counsellors have worked extensively with the young
unemployed and with drug and alcohol abuse. This gives us a
particular interest in the issues faced by young people today.
The issues that these young people bring with them, such as
behavioural problems, the effects of emotional or sexual
abuse, extreme neglect and deprivation, eating disorders,
alcohol and drug problems, enables our counsellors to be more
aware than most of what the world is really like for young
people today.
Adytum works in partnership with, amongst others, Shaw
Trust, Neath & Port Talbot CBC, Land Registry Wales,
University of Wales (Aberystwyth), Pembrokeshire College and
others. Our corporate work is ongoing and developing as time
goes on.
